Chapter 13

Moments after waking up, Elise began to teach Zeke that he should chase his toys and not her shoes. After several minutes of instruction, Zeke taught Elise that she needed to keep her shoes behind a closed door. So, one of them had been thoroughly trained that morning. On the bright side, Zeke barely noticed Marlene’s stylish furniture except for when accidentally running into it while chasing anything that rolled or skittered. At least he didn’t have a habit of chewing table legs. As much as she didn’t want to pay for new shoes, she really didn’t want to pay for a new couch or replace the artistic live-edge end table that was thankfully, much stronger than she’d expected.

Somehow, she placated Zeke with treat-dispensing toys long enough to get herself ready. Elise retrieved her red tennis shoes from the closet, clicked the treat bag around her waist, filled one pocket of her khaki shorts with disposable bags for the inevitable bathroom breaks, and managed to open the front door with Zeke only getting his mouth around one shoe that she missed. Or that he’d strategically dropped behind the couch, so she’d forget about it. When she told him to drop it, the shoe clattered to the ground and he wagged his tail, delighted to show Elise his new trick. He accepted the offered snack and immediately picked the shoe up again. He dropped it with gusto a second time at her command, tongue hanging out one side of his mouth, and eyed the bag on her waist. Elise chuckled despite the hit to her budget that seemed increasingly inevitable. She tossed the shoe into her closet and shut the door before he could get to it. Then, she gave Zeke a scratch behind the ears, and he pulled her towards the door, ready for whatever the day would bring. In light of her new FBI work, she didn’t share his enthusiasm for the day ahead, but she was more than a little relieved to have him by her side. While Zeke acted like a big sweetheart, he sure looked like a German shepherd that would jump to her defense if the need arose.

Pausing to correct Zeke multiple times had quite the impact on Elise’s morning schedule. It was a good thing Kai approved of her involvement. Of all people, he would understand the slow and steady process of teaching an animal a desired behavior. He had taught the leopards how to present body parts for wellness checks and how to hold still so veterinarians could take blood samples and conduct examinations without sedation, which was much more difficult than training an overly energetic K-9. The whole team’s love for animals made her sure they would all love Zeke as well. Provided they didn’t leave their loose footwear around.

After a thankfully uneventful car ride, Elise let her new buddy out of the back seat to smell everything. It became immediately clear that Finn’s guidance had contributed to their training success the previous day.
